pssst — “phat” means excellent btw
The idea
FI — Financial Independence — is the point where your investments generate enough passive income to cover your life, without you having to trade time for money. It’s one of the most meaningful things you can work towards, and we built PhatFI to make that journey a little easier.
The toolkit
PhatFI brings together tools, content, and community to help you find your number, track your progress, and make better decisions along the way — however you choose to get there.
What FI actually buys you
When your money works for you, you get to choose how you spend your time, where you live, what kind of work you do — and whether you do it at all. FI doesn’t prescribe what that looks like. Some people keep working because they love it. Others stop entirely. Most find something in between.
The point isn’t the destination. It’s that you get to choose — rather than your bank balance making that decision for you.
The mindset
Full FI isn’t the only win. Every percentage of the way there makes your life materially better — more options, more resilience, less financial stress. Going from 0% to 30% invested is a bigger life change than you might think.
Don’t let the size of the number put you off starting. Coast FI — having enough invested that compound growth will carry you to full FI without another penny contributed — is a meaningful milestone in itself. You don’t have to make it all the way to win.
The approach
The FI gap — the difference between what you earn and what you invest — can be closed from either end. Cutting spending is one lever. Increasing income is another. Most people use both, and there is no right answer.
If you earn well and live a life you enjoy, you don’t need to grind it down to nothing. A higher income that you invest consistently will get you there just as surely as radical frugality — and you’ll arrive in better shape. This is not a site about suffering through life on a shoestring.
The community
The tools and maths of FI are straightforward. The hard part is everything else — staying invested when markets fall, not spending the windfall, not comparing yourself to someone on a different path, not losing conviction when the people around you don’t get it.
Your attitude and temperament as an investor matter more than almost any financial decision you make. A steady hand through a 30% drawdown is worth more than the perfect asset allocation. But staying steady is much easier when you’re not doing it alone.
That’s why community is central to what PhatFI is trying to build — not just a set of calculators, but a place where like-minded people can share what’s working, talk honestly about what isn’t, and remind each other why they started. The right people around you can be the difference between staying the course and giving up.
